Hi, I’m Jay. I graduated from Ohio State University with a B.S. in Data Analytics, where I spent most of my undergraduate years diving deep into mathematics, statistics, and computer science. My peers often called tackling all three disciplines at once “pure madness,” and they weren’t wrong. It was a grueling journey, but that struggle now serves as the powerhouse for my understanding of AI. Since modern AI is driven by deep learning, it is essentially the convergence of calculus, linear algebra, advanced statistics, and computer science.
After graduating in May 2025, I spent a lot of time thinking about which industry to apply my skills to. I’ve always believed that our career paths are heavily influenced by the people around us. Following the advice of my brother, who is a cybersecurity engineer in Korea, I realized that the synergy between AI/ML and security would be incredibly powerful. This led me to focus my current search on cybersecurity internships and entry-level opportunities.
My neighbors, who are veterans of the defense industry (including a retired Air Force Colonel with over 30 years of service, and professionals from Lockheed Martin and Leidos), shared some profound insights with me. They mentioned that while financial success is important, the satisfaction it provides eventually plateaus. However, the fulfillment derived from serving one’s country or contributing to the next generation as a scientist offers a sense of happiness that lasts a lifetime. Seeing the respect and aura of honor they carried within the community inspired me to walk a similar path.
Since I am a green card holder and these goals require U.S. citizenship, I began the application process in December 2025. I recently received notice from USCIS to appear for my interview and exam within a month. As citizenship is typically granted on the day of the interview, I am standing at a major turning point in my life and career.
Currently, I am simultaneously managing multiple assignments:
- Citizenship exam preparations
- Studying for the CompTIA Security+ certification exam
- Georgia Tech MSCS program (currently taking Deep Learning course)
- AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test)
- Actively seeking cybersecurity internships
