The TA Life: Boots on the Ground
Before joining the ROK Army, I spent my final semester as an undergraduate Teaching Assistant (TA) at a university in Korea. While a TA in the US might focus on grading or tutoring, a TA in Korea is essentially the backbone of the department operations. It was a physically and mentally demanding grind, but the technical field experience was worth every drop of sweat.

I wasn’t just a TA; I was the primary contact for every technical hurdle in the building. The raw reality of my job involved fielding these exact questions every single day:
- “My computer doesn’t turn on.”
- “My device says I need to update its firmware. What is firmware?”
- “My keyboard or mouse doesn’t work.”
- “The projector won’t display my laptop screen.”
- “What is the right cable for this equipment?”
- “Which one is DP, HDMI, DVI, or USB2?”
- “My account won’t log in.”
- …and the classic: “How do I lock or unlock the classroom? Where is the key?”
The Software Installation Marathon
Our lab had 100 Mac desktops. Since they all ran Windows via Parallels, I was effectively managing 200 operating systems. My colleague and I handled everything: updating aging OS versions, installing professional suites like Adobe Creative Cloud, and managing antivirus software. This was the HDD era, so installations took forever. We had to time our meals in shifts, heading to the cafeteria while waiting for those slow progress bars to hit 100%.

Hardware Modernization
We eventually upgraded the entire lab to the classic aluminum Mac Pros. These machines were massive blocks of metal, weighing at least 20kg each. This transition triggered a ripple effect across all peripheral equipment. For instance, external hard drives used for transporting assignments had to be reformatted to exFAT instead of NTFS to ensure cross-platform compatibility. Hauling dozens of these units was a legitimate full-body workout that my muscles still remember. It was “grunt work” in every sense of the word, but it provided me with a unique, hands-on perspective on hardware lifecycle management.

Balancing my studies with TA responsibilities at a Korean university was demanding, yet it proved to be an invaluable learning experience. I gained the confidence to install any software and developed the problem-solving skills necessary to handle unexpected errors during the process.
Additionally, I diagnosed various connectivity issues with hardware such as beam projectors, and printers. Moving heavy aluminum Mac desktops also gave me a literal, firsthand lesson in the reality of gravity.
